STEPS
Video clip showing bladder scan in a transverse followed by longitudinal orientation
Video of a bladder scan with color doppler showing ureteral jets (ureters ejecting urine into the bladder following ureteral peristalsis)
- normal jets can be seen every 6-10 seconds
- absence of jets can be due to reduced / absent peristaltic motion - may be a sign of obstruction on that side, though this is not a sensitive sign.
- Scan the bladder in BOTH transverse AND longitudinal / sagittal orientations, ultrasound probe between the umbilicus and the symphysis pubis.
- Sweep through the bladder in both planes, from top to bottom in transverse, and from side to side in longitudinal.
- May need to angle probe inferior if bladder is empty or catheterized (i.e. peer under the symphysis pubis).
- Scan the bladder in transverse, find the view where the bladder has the largest dimensions.
- Freeze the image, click on the 'Calc' button, followed by 'D1'. Measure the AP (Antero-posterior) diameter from inner wall to inner wall and click 'save'.
- Click on 'D2', measure the transverse diameter, and click 'save'.
- Scan the bladder in longitudinal, find the view where the bladder has the largest dimensions.
- Freeze the image, click on the 'Calc' button, followed by 'D3'. Measure the superior-inferior diameter and click 'save'
- The estimated bladder volume will be shown in the left lower corner of the screen.
